Well, I was walkin’ on down the street,
Said there’s a babe that I’d like to meet,
Will she be sweet? Will she be kind?
Will I really blow her mind?
So I walked over and said, “Hello Mam,
Can you please help me out, I’m in a jam,
Just got out after a year in the slam,
That ain’t no lie; that ain’t no scam.

Don’t have a job, look like a slob,
But I’m a good guy, I really am.”

She smiled and said, “I understand,
I’d be happy to give you a hand.
I said, “Let’s take a stroll, in the park,
Before it starts, to get dark.”
I took her hand, ever so gently,
It was so, fundamentally . . .

Good for me to be, with someone,
Who wasn’t secretly, carrying a gun,
Who wasn’t backing, away in fear,
Of what I might do, if I got too near.

I said, “This last year has been a year in hell,
But I clean up very well.”
And then the question, it came very fast,
“What did you do?” she finally asked.

Should I lie or tell the truth?
I’ve been so very bad in my youth.

“I’ll tell you what,” I finally replied,
“I hope that you won’t leave my side.
I was in a gang and there was a fight,
And one guy died in the street that night.
Please believe me when I tell you that I didn’t do it,
But the cops, they really put me through it.

I didn’t have a gun - just a knife,
So I got off easy, didn’t go down for life.”

The smile had faded from her face,
Would she try to, spray me with mace?
She looked at me, and said with grace,
“Let’s go over, to my place.”

I couldn’t believe it, was this for real?
I’d a been happy with a home-cooked meal.

I said, “I ain’t got nothin’ but the clothes on my back,
Twenty bucks in my pocket and a very great lack,
Of anything, else to do,
But spend the night making love to you.

She stepped back, looked at me very sly,
But them came a twinkle, in her eye.

Was this really happening to me?
It felt like a dream, it could not be.
She smiled and blossomed just like a flower,
“You’re gonna take a very long shower.

And then I’ll cook something up for you,
Too soon to say what we’re gonna do.”

It was a small place, up a flight of stairs,
With a little table, and just two chairs.
She poured me a glass of very cheap wine,
But it tasted, so divine.
Looking at her from across the table,
Wondering if I would really be able . . .

To give her the lovin’ that she deserved,
It had been awhile, and I was somewhat unnerved.

So I took a shower, feeling light and breezy,
Making love to her was very easy.
I’ll bet you thought she’d turn out to be a he,
Because she was so easy.

Well, I’m happy to say, to my delight,
Mine was the only pee wee in the bed that night.

And when it was over, after a year in the slam,
All I could think to say was, “Thank you, Mam.
You’ve been so sweet, and really groovy,
Just like Donna Reed in an old time movie.”

And so it was, as they say,
That every dog, has his day.
Well this was mine, and I have to say,
That she’ll be with me till they carry me away.
